A poster format collection from the Cepheus project



In this collection of my images, the objects shown in a large mosaic of the constellation Cepheus, are collected together. There are indicator lines to show the actual location of object in a large context. As can be seen, I have shot many objects in various focal lengths.

 The Cepheus project was my last published image before the major break down of my imaging equipment.

All images are in mapped colors from the emission of ionized elements, R=Sulfur, G=Hydrogen and B=Oxygen.

NGC 7380 and the "Wizard Nebula", start of the new project





NGC 7380, Sh2-142 , the "Wizard Nebula", locates in constellation Cepheus about 7000 light years from Oulu, Finland. The open star cluster has a catalog number NGC 7380. It's a relatively young cluster, about 5 million years. Nebula spans some 110 light years.

There is only 1h 20 min. H-a light for the object, due some technical problems. Ones again, I spend most of the night by fixing my ***** scope.
Seeing was better than usually, FWHM about 2,5".
I'll shoot much more H-alpha data and other NB channels, S-II and O-III later.
Image is very noisy due the short exposure time.

Stacked and calibrated in CCDStack.
Levels and curves  in PS CS3.

Telescope, Meade LX200 GPS 12" @ f5
Camera, QHY9 Guiding, SXV-AO @ 6Hz
Image Scale, 0,75 arcseconds/pixel
Exposures H-alpha 4x1200s, binned 1x1

The "Bubble Nebula", in Hubble palette, apparent scale in the sky





I have shot many targets with several focal lengths. 
Due that, I will publish some of my material as an image sets, with different field of view and detail levels.
The fractal nature of our universe stands out nicely by this way and it will make the orientation more easy.

Many times, it's difficult to understand the image scale of astronomical images.
Due that, I will add a Moon circle in some of the images to show the angular scale in a sky. 
The full Moon has an angular size of ~30 arc minutes, that's equal to ~0,5 degrees.

Images are in HST-palette, (HST=Hubble Space Telescope)
from the emission of ionized elements, R=Sulfur, G=Hydrogen and B=Oxygen.
Star colors are mixed from the NB channels, Red=H-a, G=O-III and B= 85%O-III + 15%H-a.
NOTE. The size of the full Moon (0,5 degrees) is marked as a gray circle in all of the images.

The bubble structure is created by a strong stellar wind, a radiation pressure, from massive hot magnitude 8,7 central star, SAO 20575, it can be seen in an image inside of the bubble, off centered at Right.
Bubble is an expanding shock front inside a giant molecular cloud and it has a diameter more than Six light years. The spherical formation is expanding at speed of 6500.000 km/h, due the huge scale and distance we can't see the movement easily. In a century, the bubble in this image will be only about one pixel wider, than now! ( ~1 arc second)Strong UV-radiation from a central star ionized elements in a gas and makes them glow at typical wavelength to each element. (Hydrogen glows Red light as Sulfur, Oxygen emits Green/Blue light at visible wavelengths)

An animated image of the star and starless versions of the "Wizard Nebula"

I often use a starless image in one of the processing steps of the astronomical image.
Sometimes I publish the starless version too, it looks kind of nice, or spooky, that's a matter of taste.

If there is a dense star-field, nebula itself could be hard to detect. When stars are suppressed, the nebula can be seen better due the fact, that human brains tend to form false shapes from the cloud of dots.

Bubble Nebula, apparent scale in the sky, horizontal editions




I have shot many targets with several focal lengths. 
Due that, I will publish some of my material as an image sets, with different field of view and detail levels.
The fractal nature of our universe stands out nicely by this way and it will make the orientation more easy.

Many times, it's difficult to understand the image scale of astronomical images.
Due that, I will add a Moon circle in some of the images to show the angular scale in a sky. 
The full Moon has an angular size of ~30 arc minutes, that's equal to ~0,5 degrees.

Ra 23h 20m 48s Dec +61° 12′ 06″


Natural color composition from the emission of ionized elements, R=80%Hydrogen+20%Sulfur, G=100%Oxygen and B=85%Oxygen+15%Hydrogen to compensate otherwise missing H-beta emission. This composition is very close to a visual spectrum.

NOTE. The size of the full Moon (0,5 degrees) is marked as a scale.

Bubble Nebula reprocessed, again




Since my processing technique gets better and weather doesn't give any support, I have reprocessed some older images. There is now star colors added and other processing is tweaked too.

I made this animation originally to be sure, that I don't have any artifacts from my experimental processing workflow.

Imaged in three nights between 27.09 - 04-09 2009, seeing varys between 4-2,5 FWHM

Cassiopeia mosaic gets larger, now up to Cepheus

 I started this imaging project at Spring season 2020m now I have shot more frames for this active region of the sky. At center of the photo lays the Bubble and cave nebula At lower left locates the Cederblad 214 and just few degrees to right from it lays the supernova remnant CTB1, it can be seen as a thin ring like formation. The Wizard nebula can be seen at upper right corner of the image. Note. there is a moon as a scale at a lower left corner of the image. This is a large area of space and I I have now join this mosaic image to a large one from 2012. I will continue this mosaic soon!


There is an interesting looking dim and large circular formation at center left, there is a bright star at almost center of it. Could this be an uncataloged supernova remnant?

Total exposure time is now around 150 hours, if older exposures are included. with my current wide field imaging system build around the Tokina AT-x 300 mm f2.8 camera optics.  Astro Don 50x50 mm square  narrowband filters, 5nm H-alpha, 3nm O-III and 3nm S-II. Camera is a massive Apogee Alta U16.

This mosaic has now twenty individual frame stitched seamlessly together,

Cassiopeia mosaic gets larger

 


I started this imaging project at Spring season 2020m now I have shot more frames for this active region of the sky. At center of the photo lays the Bubble and cave nebula At lower left locates the Cederblad 214 and just few degrees to right from it lays the supernova remnant CTB1, it can be seen as a thin ring like formation. Total exposure time is now around 50 hours with my current wide field imaging system build around the Tokina AT-x 300 mm f2.8 camera optics.  Astro Don 50x50 mm square  narrowband filters, 5nm H-alpha, 3nm O-III and 3nm S-II. Camera is a massive Apogee Alta U16. This mosaic has now ten frames.
