Butterfly nebula as an animated 3D, new version

In this blog, there is lots of experimental material. To see my actual astroimages, please, see my Portfolio:http://astroanarchy.zenfolio.com/
Updated, 30.03.2010

Animations are made by creating artificial parallax to an image. Then two images are animated together by using conversion web service, Start3D. There can be some artifacts in images, due the experimental nature of this work! The volumetric models are based on some known facts and an artistic impression.
Please, let the images load for few seconds to see them animated!

Stereo news

I recently found couple of interesting Stereo image sites:

http://www.londonstereo.com/ In this site, there is a link to a work of T.R. Williams (1824-1871)

Brian May , he is a PhD of Astrophysics, guitarist, songwriter and founding member of Queen. Beside that, he is a stereo image enthusiast!

"Village of Lost and Found" is a 3D-stereo book about the work of T.R. Williams made by Brian May and photographic historian Elena Vidal. There is a clever stereo viewing device with the book, the OWL stereoscope, it's designed and produced by Brian May!

I see "Village of Lost and Found" as a most important cultural work. I will have my own copy very soon and I'll write a small book review after that.

This stereo pair is a kind of "preview", since I have just started this project. I'll do the final version, when ever project is finalized.

Abell 21, Sh2-274, the "Medusa Nebula", Start of the new project.

The Medusa Nebula in Gemini is also known as Abell 21 and Sharpless 274. It's a large nebula as a planetary one, due that the surface brightness is very low, between 15.99 to 25.
Ones again, this target is very low for me, at highest elevation in South, it was about 35 degrees and after a three hours, the altitude was only a 25 degrees.
I managed to get only one 20min frame of O-III, binned 3x3,  but there was some signal, so I was able to make the "preview" image as a color one. (Red=H-a, Green=O-III and Blue=80%O-III + 20%H-a)

I'll continue with this target as soon as the weather cooperates againg.

Processing work flow:
Image acquisition, MaxiDL v5.07.
Stacked and calibrated in CCDStack.
Levels, curves and color combine in PS CS3.

Telescope, Meade LX200 GPS 12" @ f5
Camera, QHY9 Guiding, SXV-AO @ 10Hz
Image Scale, 0,75 arcseconds/pixel
Exposures H-alpha 8x1200s, binned 1x1, O-III 1x1200s, binned 3x3.

An experimental M101 Galaxy

Galaxy in "natural" color. Narrowband channels are mixed to match visible spectrum. Red=80% H-alpha+20% S-II, Green=O-III and Blue=80% O-III+20% H-alpha to compensate otherwise missing H-beta.
Galaxy in HST-palette, Red=S-II, Green=H-a and Blue=O-III

It's a Galaxy season but since my light pollution is so bad, I'm not able to do good broad band imaging, needed for targets like Glaxies.
I made this experiment to see, if it's possible to shoot Glaxy with NB-filters, there is some Broad band luminance used, it's shot with a Hutech light pollution filter.

Kind of interesting to see, how emission areas pop up visually, there was strongish signal in H-a and S-II,
O-III was weaker but there was couple of srong O-III regions, they are seen as Blue in a HST-palette image. There was some very weak O-III signal in a largish area around the Galaxy core, it can barely seen as a Bluish hue in the both images.

Processing work flow:
Image acquisition, MaxiDL v5.07.
Stacked and calibrated in CCDStack.
Deconvolution with a CCDSharp, 30 iterations.
Levels, curves and color combine in PS CS3.
Broadband data is mixed to a narrowband channels in PS.

Telescope, Meade LX200 GPS 12" @ f5
Camera, QHY9 Guiding, SXV-AO @ 10Hz
Image Scale, 0,75 arcseconds/pixel
Exposures,
H-alpha 10x1200s, binned 1x1
S-II 3x1200s binned 2x2
O-III 4x1200s binned 3x3
Luminance,
Hutec LP-filter 6x1200s

Plain narrowband images:

No broad band component, only H-a, S-II and O-III.
Narrowband channels are mixed to match visible spectrum. Red=80% H-alpha+20% S-II, Green=O-III and Blue=80% O-III+20% H-alpha to compensate otherwise missing H-beta.

No broad band component, only H-a, S-II and O-III.

Soul Nebula closeup

Nebula in natural color. Narrowband channels are mixed to match visible spectrum. Red=80% H-alpha+20% S-II, Green=O-III and Blue=80% O-III+20% H-alpha to compensate otherwise missing H-beta.

Nebula in HST-palette, Red=S-II, Green=H-a and Blue=O-III

The nebula season is kind of over but up here, 65N, it's still very possible to shoot some nebulae.
The Soul nebula, IC 1848, was in western sky at elevation of 55 degrees when I started imaging, at Nine a clock. I took last images at four in a morning, at that time the elevation was about 30 degrees and it was just past the Northern moust point at a sky. Evem though I spen whole night shooting this, poor transparency, speeding clouds and, due previous, lost guidestar, I was able to use only Seven 20min. frames for this.
Color for the final image are taken from my older narrowband image from 2008, the original Blog post can be found here: http://astroanarchy.blogspot.com/2008/10/heart-soul.html

Processing work flow:
Image acquisition, MaxiDL v5.07.
Stacked and calibrated in CCDStack.

Telescope, Meade LX200 GPS 12" @ f5
Camera, QHY9 Guiding, SXV-AO @ 10Hz
Image Scale, 0,75 arcseconds/pixel
Exposures H-alpha 7x1200s, binned 1x1
Note. O-III and S-II are taken from older image of the Soul and Heart nebulae.
Colors are taken from this narrowband, HST-palette, image. Current image is marked with Cyan rectangle.

M1, the "Crab Nebula", finalized

Nebula in natural color. Narrowband channels are mixed to match visible spectrum. Red=80% H-alpha+20% S-II, Green=O-III and Blue=80% O-III+20% H-alpha to compensate otherwise missing H-beta.

Nebula in HST-palette, Red=S-II, Green=H-a and Blue=O-III

The Crab Nebula supernova remnant locates in constellation Taurus. The actual, bright, supernova was seen by Chinese and Arab astronomers in 1054.
Distance from Earth is about 6500 light years and diameter of the nebula is about 11 light years. Supernova remnant expands at a rate of about 1500 kilometers/second.

Last night I shot S-II channel and, for the first time, broadband luminance to show the broadband component in the nebula. There is a, 30 rounds per second spinning, massive, very magnetic,  neutron star in the core of the M 1. The hot plasma strikes existing gas, causing it glow in colors across the electromagnetic spectrum. Without broadband luminance, I can show only a part of the nebulas appearance.

M1, the "Crab nebula"

Nebula in natural color, composed from two narrowband channel, O-III & H-alpha.
This is a difficult target up here in North, due the smallish angular size and the low maximum elevation.
I shot final O-III frames when target was only about 20 degreen above horizont.
Seeing was better than few nights ago but not as good as I was hoping.

O-III 2x1200s binned 2x2
I'll shoot the S-II channel and more O-III later, when weather let me do so.
